GENEALOGY RESOURCES ON THE INTERNET
Version 5: February 4, 1996
Compiled and continuously updated by:
* Chris Gaunt (cgaunt@umich.edu)(71031,2100 on CIS)
* John Fuller (johnf14246@aol.com)
(This document is best viewed using Courier and an 80 column display.)
There is a wealth of genealogy resources on the Internet that can be accessed
through Mailing Lists, USENET Newsgroups, anonymous File Transfer Protocol
(FTP), Gopher, World Wide Web, Telnet, and E-Mail. This document is an
inventory of these resources based on personal investigation and the
consolidation of information received from others too numerous to mention (we
do thank you all).
This document only lists sources and does not provide the detailed "how-to"
associated with our travels along the Information Highway (a future project?).
Note that Internet addresses are subject to change ... the addresses listed in
this document have been verified to the best of our ability but there is no
guarantee that they are still valid. We ask anyone who has problems with the
addresses listed in this document to please let us know so that further
verification can be undertaken.
We would appreciate any additions to the list and any corrections you might
have, based on your experiences in accessing the various sites. Please send
your additions/corrections to the Mailing List, Newsgroup, FTP, and Email
sections to johnf14246@aol.com and your corrections to the Gopher, WWW, and
Telnet sections to cgaunt@umich.edu.

A. MAILING LISTS
Last update: February 1, 1996
Maintained by John Fuller, johnf14246@aol.com
Welcome packages are generally provided when you subscribe. It is recommended
that these be kept on file since they contain important information about
posting, unsubscribing, and other aspects of list membership that will be
useful to you in the future. Also note that a number of lists are included for
various countries and areas of the world where the list descriptions do not
specifically address genealogy. While these lists are not devoted to
genealogy, the list owners have indicated that genealogy is an acceptable,
though in some cases unusual, subject for the list.
You will note that a number of mailing list servers require "Subscribe"
(without the quotes) as the subject line of your request to be added to the
list. Due to the way in which some outgoing mail systems are set up, the
server may actually read the first line of text as the subject line.
Therefore, for mailing lists that require "Subscribe" as the subject line, it
is recommended that "Subscribe" (without the quotes) also be included as the
only text of your request.

D. TELNET SITES
Last update: January 1, 1996
Maintained by Chris Gaunt, cgaunt@umich.edu.
Note: You must have a telnet program to use the telnet sites. Most Unix
accounts have the program available to their users: type telnet and the site
name at your system prompt and if you have the program it will try to connect
to that site. If you don't have the program you most likely will get an error
message. If you are using a graphical browser, you must have the telnet
program added to it to use telnet sites. For Netscape you set this up in
the Preferences Menu.

F. WORLD WIDE WEB
Last update: January 28, 1996
Maintained by Chris Gaunt, cgaunt@umich.edu.
A note about addresses: When you enter the address into your web
browser, it must be one continuous line. Some of the addresses
listed below are too long to fit on one line, and so are broken up. It
would be easiest to copy and paste each segment into the browser's
"Location" or "URL" or "Go To" field, leaving no spaces between
segments.
Also, if you find an address that doesn't work, please email Chris
Gaunt, cgaunt@umich.edu so that I can check it out and update the file.
Thanks!

BEGINNER'S CORNER (Beginners to Genealogy Research)
Treasure Maps - the How-to Genealogy WWW Site
http://www.firstct.com/fv/tmaps.html
This site deals with helping beginning and intermediate genealogists
work on their projects. You will find help on getting started, filling
out family group sheets, what the Soundex is, how to get started using
the Federal Censuses, how to use the Family History Centers to their
fullest, how to do tombstone rubbings, what to do with old photos, how
to get past the "stone wall" when you can't find any more info on that
one ancestor. More information on other topics will be added.
Questions or suggestions for future topics can be emailed via the web.
There is also a monthly newsletter produced which you can receive by
email. See the web page or this document's email section for details.
The site is funded by various genealogical businesses and services, so
check out their wares, as they are supporting a very worthwhile site.

OAK Software Repository, a massive software archive
Part of the VSL (Virtual Software Library), http://vsl.cnet.com/.
SimTel archives are divided by operating system, then by topic. You
can choose Windows 95, for example, and then page down (or
search/find) to genealogy. The link shows you the software available
for that operating system from the SimTel archives. Following a link
on a topic shows you all the files with that topic/keyword in the
description. (Descriptions are short, and comparisons non-existent.)
Following a link on a filename shows you where to find that file
worldwide, with sites ranked by asterisks (the more, the better the
site).
Other archive sites follow the listing of SimTel archive links.

G. EMAIL SITES
Last update: February 1, 1996
Maintained by John Fuller, johnf14246@aol.com
1. Accessing the Internet by Email by Bob Rankin (how to do just about
everything on the Internet by email).
Email to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu (US, Canada, South America) with the
following as the only text:
send usenet/news.answers/internet-services/access-via-email
or email to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk (Europe, Asia, etc.) with the
following as the only text:
send lis-iis e-access-inet.txt
2. Addresses (People posting to USENET Newsgroups).
To get a list of the Internet addresses for individuals who have posted
to USENET Newsgroups, send email to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with the
following message: send usenet-addresses/name. The "name" should be one
or more space-separated words for which you want to search; since the
search is fuzzy (i.e., all of the words you specify do not have to
match), you should list all of the words you think might appear in the
address (e.g., first and last name, possible username, and possible
components of the host name (e.g. "mit" for a person who you think is at
MIT). The case and order of the words you list are ignored. Multiple
requests can appear (on separate lines), but each request will be
answered in a separate message. The mail server will return a maximum of
only 40 matches.
3. Afro American Registry.
If you have information on African Americans, including those who find
mention of African Americans in wills, letters, diaries, etc. Send
email to cristal@ripco.com.
4. American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.

The RLL is compiled from locations e-mailed to Suzanne Badenhop
(ahcsbb@ukcc.uky.edu) by network people doing genealogical research in a
particular location who are willing to exchange information. The idea is
that, if you had ancestors living in the same place in the same period,
it might be beneficial to compare notes. The list is updated on the
third Sunday of January, March, May, July, September, and November. To
get the entire RLL, send the following to listserv@mail.eworld.com (the
file you receive will also contain instructions for submission of
entries to the RLL): GET FAMILY LOCLIST
24. Roots Surname List (RSL).
The RSL is a list of surnames with associated dates and locations that
is intended to help genealogical researchers locate others interested in
sharing and comparing data about the same families. Genealogists are
welcome to submit their surnames for inclusion in the RSL if they are
willing to share their data with others who may be doing parallel
research. The =update= to the RSL is posted to the ROOTS-L mailing list
and the soc.genealogy.surnames newsgroup on the first Sunday of the
month. At the same time, the entire RSL is stored on the ROOTS-L
listserver. To obtain information on the RSL, send the following to
listserv@mail.eworld.com: GET FAMILY README
25. RSL Search Program.
A program to search the Roots Surname List and receive information on

to rsl-info@gen.roc.wayne.edu with any subject and text. To submit a
query, send email to rsl@gen.roc.wayne.edu with the body of the message
containing the surnames you are interested in. The response will contain
all of the matches for these surnames and information on the people who
submitted those matches. The program will ignore any line that contains
more than one word so be sure each surname is on a separate line. You
can search for a name with spaces by adding a '/' before the name (e.g.,
/Van Camp would search for Van Camp but not VanCamp). The program
searches for all names beginning with the name that you submitted (e.g.,
a search for 'Smith' would provide Smith, Smithson, Smithberg, etc.). If
you wish to search for only 'Smith', place '?' in front of the name
(e.g., ?Smith) and you will receive only those entries for Smith. You
can combine the '/' and '?' features (e.g., entering '/?Van Camp' would
return all 'Van Camp' entries, while entering '/Van Camp' would return
'Van Camp' and 'Van Campen').

Swedish-American organizations, and a wide collection of secondary,

of national Swedish church records, through it persons can purchase
microfiche copies of these records from SVAR in Sweden. The Center
receives hundreds of genealogical inquires from the U.S., Canada, and
Sweden every year and has one full-time employee, as well as students

derived will be appended to the end of each entry. You can then send for
the tafels themselves by sending messages to the same address (e.g.,
send tt/keen.tt). Only one search or one file can be made per message.
Submissions to the archive can be sent to ttafel@genealogy.emcee.com.
Send only properly formatted tiny tafels and include no additional text
at either the top or bottom. It is important that the header information
properly identifies you. The Tiny Tafel Email Server can also convert
your surnames to Soundex (one name per message). Just put the following
in the _subject_ line: soundex desired_name. For more information about
this server, send email to tt-info@genealogy.emcee.com (no subject nor
message required).
